FIELD GUIDE / 03OPEN FIELDWORKHUMAN JUDGMENT

Leaders operating with meaningful stakes, uncertainty and compressed time.

Pressure does not create judgment. It reveals the system beneath it

Speed without framing turns urgency into expensive motion.

THE SIGNAL

The window is narrowing, consequences are rising and the organization is accelerating before it has named the governing decision.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  1. Activity is being used as evidence of progress.
  2. The most available information is receiving more weight than the most consequential information.
  3. Teams are optimizing reversible details while avoiding the irreversible choice.
THE OPERATING MOVE

Identify what must be true, what cannot be recovered and what can still be tested. Protect the irreversible decision; accelerate everything else.

PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

How do you structure a consequential decision under time pressure?

Name the decision, deadline and consequence first. Distinguish irreversible commitments from reversible tests. Identify the minimum evidence needed, assign a decision owner and state what new information would trigger a review.

What is the difference between urgency and progress?

Urgency describes the time available. Progress describes a change in the conditions needed for the outcome. Track resolved uncertainties and completed decisions alongside activity, rather than treating speed as proof of progress.
